Growing your business

Once a home based business expands beyond the acceptable limits of the planning code, it becomes a small business that is unsuitable to be located at a home and should relocate to a suitable business location outside of the residential area.

In simple terms if the business negatively impacts on local residents and they have a legitimate concern it is probably not suitable for a residential area and the options are:

Commercial Areas:  These are precincts that are suitable for retail and office environments, and activities that have minimal impact on amenity and do not generate significant noise.

  • High volume street exposure
  • Parking availability varies from site to site
  • Space is at a premium and can be expensive
  • Ideal for a retail activity

Industrial Areas:
These are precincts that are suitable for manufacturing and repairs, the automotive industry, metal workers and cabinetmakers. These areas allow some noise, some outside storage of materials and will be cheaper than high profile commercial areas.
  • Reduced street exposure
  • Usually plenty of storage space
  • Suitable for creating some noise and using chemicals
  • Ideal for motor trades and manufacturing
