7 things to consider before setting up or expanding your home-based business:

Structural alterations to the premises:  A building or plumbing approval may be required if there are to be structural changes.

Business Registration:  Business owners are generally required to register their business with a number of State and Federal Government agencies depending on the type of business.

Operating, Marketing, and Financial plans:  All small business operators should consider a range of issues and detailed planning will help you identify customers, market areas, pricing and competitive factors affecting your business. The State Development Centre on the Sunshine Coast may be able to assist you in planning your business activities. Your local Council’s Economic Development Unit can also help you with statistics, data and business networking.

Legal and Taxation Considerations:  You will need to consider a wide range of legal and taxation issues for your business. You should talk to a professional business advisor or contact the relevant government agency to discuss your situation.

Chemicals and equipment storage:  Depending on the volume of chemicals to be stored on the premises, planning approval and a flammable liquid licence may be required.

Open Spaces:  Businesses are not permitted to use Council land i.e. parks, parking lots and footpaths without the approval of Council.

Business Viability:  Starting and growing your business will provide your with many rewards but may also present many challenges.
